Fifty-nine interns who are part of the Richardson Mayor’s Summer Internship Program are wrapping up their summer employment this month. The program pairs high school students with businesses ranging from corporate offices and nonprofit organizations to government agencies.

The program provides students with a paid nine-week internship. The experience is something that should benefit the students as they go to college and prepare for the future.

There are five interns working for the City of Richardson: one each with Communications and Engagement, Police, Information Technology, Emergency Management and Animal Services.

Jackie Lopez, an intern at the Animal Shelter, said her experience has been nothing but amazing.

“I’m doing something I enjoy doing. I look forward to it every single day. It’s just something to put my mind at ease and since this is something I want to do and follow in the future, I look forward to it,” she said.

Shea Southern, an intern with the Communications and Engagement Department, wants to eventually end up working in the visual or audio fields of communication.

“I think this is going to give me good insight into, maybe, what field of communications I want to do or tell me whether I want to work for a government agency, in the private sector or in a production house,” he explained.
