Raksa Bandhana, loosely translated as the “Protection Connection,” is a traditional Hindu holiday that reaffirms the relationship between sisters and brothers.
During the festival, the sister ties a string known as a Rakhi around her brother’s wrist as a symbol of her love. Not only does the brother promise to protect his sister, but the sister’s Rakhi also protects the brother from life’s adversities.
“We want to treat City leaders like our brothers and sisters. As they serve the community, we want to give them the Rakhi and celebrate with them, sharing the traditions and beliefs, and connecting with them,“ said Sachin Dantulwar, volunteer with HSS.
Volunteers with the Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (HSS), a non-profit organization which promotes self-discipline, self-confidence, and a spirit of selfless service for humanity through structured values education programs, visit civic leaders and public safety officers offering them the Protection Connection by tying Rakhis on them.
