The Richardson Animal Shelter was happy to announce this week that “Twister the Tornado Dog” has been adopted. Twister, believed to be a pit bull/terrier/German Shepherd mix, was one of seven dogs found lost after the Oct. 20 tornado that were rescued by the Shelter, and the last one to find a new home (most were reunited with their “original” families).

Twister’s adoption Dec. 9 came as a direct result of the Shelter’s new program, Doggy Day Out, which allows volunteers to “borrow” Shelter dogs for a day or weekend to provide them with more interaction, fun and socialization and to help the community become aware of adoptable pets (the dogs wear a harness emblazoned with the words, “Adopt Me”). Twister was out shopping with a Doggy Day Out volunteer Dec. 8 when he was seen by his new owner, who came into the Shelter the next day to inquire about adopting him.
