With rain back in the forecast more frequently comes the opportunity to collect rain via a rain barrel, a great way to conserve water, capture water for outdoor irrigation and foundation watering and lower water bills. To learn how to collect and utilize rainwater at home, free rain barrel classes are available online from Water University, a division of Texas A&M’s AgriLife Extension Service—the next class is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 8 from 6-8 p.m. via Microsoft Teams.
Participants have the option to purchase 55-gallon rain barrels (recycled food-grade containers that are roughly 24”x36”) for $50, available online until Sept. 9 with pick-up Sept. 12 in McKinney, Irving and The Colony.
To register for the class and/or purchase a rain barrel, visit Water University’s events page online. Note that rainwater harvesting systems must be registered with the City at no charge (if 400 gallons or less). Larger systems require a paid permit.
