This year marks the 50th anniversary of Sherrill Park Golf Course. The City-owned course opened Aug. 27, 1973 and has been a favorite of North Texas golfers ever since. More than 91,000 rounds of golf were played at Sherrill Park last year, to go along with 3,200 lessons to ensure the game of golf continues to grow in Richardson.

The course is named after R.B. Sherrill, Richardson’s first City Manager, who served from 1956-73 and was instrumental in the planning and opening of the course.

Since its opening, Sherrill Park has been one of the best values for North Texas golfers. Sherrill Park’s two courses regularly rank among the top public courses in Texas. Earlier this year, The Dallas Morning News ranked Sherrill Park’s Course 1 #23 in the state among mid-priced courses ($61-$94), and Course 2 #24 for economy-priced courses (under $60).

“Looking back, I think about what kind of amenity Sherrill Park has been for the City of Richardson,” said Head Professional Ronny Glanton. “There have been well over 5 million rounds of golf played here over 50 years, so when you look at the amount of people who have come through here and the lives that have been touched by the game of golf, it is pretty incredible.”
In celebration of its 50th anniversary, Sherrill Park has the following planned:

  • When Sherrill Park opened in 1973 it did so with a Pro-Am Tournament. In keeping with this spirit, on Sept. 8, a special 50th anniversary Pro-Am Tournament is planned.
  • Two 50th anniversary logos can be seen on the flags on the greens of both Course 1 and Course 2, with the squirrel logo also on the scorecards.
  • Merchandise celebrating the anniversary is for sale in the Pro Shop including caps, shirts and jackets.
  • A special 50th anniversary golf ball was placed in the City’s sesquicentennial time capsule.

To coincide with the 50th anniversary, a new Sherrill Park website launched this month. The website features a complete redesign and a fresh, clean look that is mobile-friendly and makes it easier for golfers to book tee times, learn about upcoming tournaments and golf leagues, and explore Sherrill Park via aerial footage of all 36 holes. For those looking to learn more about the game, the website features bios of Sherrill Park’s golf professionals and information on the My Performance Golf Academy, which offers private and group lessons for golfers of all ages and skill levels.

The website also includes information on the free Sherrill Park mobile app, which provides golfers a variety of features for use before, during and after a round. The full tee-to-trouble GPS mapping system allows you to measure the distance of your shots, while a stats tracker lets you track your average score and how often you birdie, par or bogey a hole. Finally, the app allows you to order food and drinks from the Clubhouse Grill while you are playing, so it is ready for you when you finish up your round.
