September is National Preparedness Month, and while preparedness is an ongoing effort, it’s an excellent time to encourage readiness and make emergency plans. Richardson’s Office of Emergency Management provides information on tornadoes, floods, power outages and other emergencies, including tips for each that help individuals and families be more prepared such as:

  • Sign up for alerts so you and your family can take immediate protective actions.
  • Decide on a meeting spot away from the home where family can meet in case of an emergency.
  • Be prepared for a power outage or any emergency by having enough food, water, and medicines (for both pets and people) to last for at least three days.
  • Gather important phone numbers and documents like insurance and medical information. Cell phone/internet services may be unreliable after an emergency.
