The Richardson Animal Shelter is taking part in a nationwide fundraising campaign where thousands of dollars are up for grab.

It’s called the Fund the Shelters Challenge, which offers an opportunity for animal welfare organizations to raise funds to support lifesaving programs and to help offset reduced or waived adoption fees during Clear the Shelters Day in August.

The Shelter is looking to raise $15,000 during the Challenge.

“We have never cleared our shelter, but we’ve had a significant amount of animals get adopted. The Challenge just increases our capacity to take in more animals that need our help and with that funding we’ll be able to help even more animals,” said Noura Jammal, supervisor of events and special projects at the Richardson Animal Shelter.

The Richardson Animal Shelter is competing for $200,000 in grand prizes and Bonus Challenges to help further its mission.  If the shelter raises the most during the Challenge, it wins a $50,000 donation.  Second place gets $35,000, Third place gets $20,000, Fourth place gets $15,000, Fifth place gets $10,000 and Sixth place gets $5,000.

The money the Shelter raises during the campaign, it gets to keep.  The Fund the Shelters Challenge is taking place now through Thursday, May 9.
