While public art at the new Public Safety Campus is still several months away from being installed, a hint of it can now be seen by travelers along Greenville Avenue: the base for “Insignia Lattice,” a metal art piece to be hung on the front side of Fire Station 1 which will cover part of the main entrance. Once the station is completed, “Lattice” will be the first of three pieces to be installed at the Campus. The others are titled “Rising Star” and “Radiant Shield.”
Designed by Texas-based art firm RE:site, the pieces will be located in various parts of the Campus and add color, light and pattern to the 10-acre public facility. Each piece will feature multiple “looks” depending on how light, both natural and artificial, interplays with the art’s components.
All three installations were chosen by an artist selection committee made up of the Police and Fire Chiefs and representatives from the Cultural Arts Commission, local arts community and citizen public safety volunteers. Funding for the art was made possible by the City’s “Percent for Arts” ordinance, adopted in July 2015 as an extension of the Public Art Master Plan.
