Today, the Richardson Police Department honored officers from across the state, who lost their lives while in the line of duty.
The department organizes the annual Memorial Service. It included the RPD Honor Guard, which performed “taps” and made a 21-gun salute.
Among the officers honored during this year’s ceremony will be Richardson Police Department Officer David Sherrard who lost his life on February 7, 2018 while searching for other victims of a shooting.
“It’s a great honor to know that the City of Richardson and the Police Department will never forget our son,” said Alvin Sherrard, father of fallen officer David Sherrard.
The ceremony was held at the outdoor fountain at the Richardson Civic Center with remarks made by Richardson City Mayor Paul Voelker and Richardson Police Chief Jimmy Spivey.
“The risks of what we do are real, they’re personal and they are here every day,” said Jimmy Spivey, Richardson Chief of Police.
A lone bagpiper closed the service.
National Police Week starts Sunday, May 12th.
