Aug. 1 marks the start of Clear the Shelters month, an annual nationwide event that promotes pet adoption and raises funds for animal welfare. NBC and Telemundo TV stations highlight local animal shelters and rescues to help get the word out, and the shelters and rescues offer discounted fees. The Richardson Animal Shelter is at capacity and has been waiving adoption fees for several months in an effort to free up space (an additional $5 registration fee for Richardson residents still applies). Fostering shelter pets is also available.

Clear the Shelters began in 2015 in North Texas with Clear the Shelters Day, when more than 50 shelters (including the Richardson Animal Shelter) offered discounts. Since then, the event has expanded nationwide and to Puerto Rico, helping more than 860,000 pets find new homes.
