In light of increased cleaning and sanitizing taking place to help minimize the spread of the coronavirus, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is encouraging all Americans to only flush toilet paper, not disinfecting wipes, paper towels and other items that should be disposed of in the trash.

Flushing anything other than toilet paper can cause toilet and sewer backups that pose a threat to human health as well as damage internal plumbing and sewer systems and pollute waterways. Fixing the backups and damage is costly and takes time and resources away from ensuring that wastewater management systems are otherwise working properly.

Having fully operational wastewater services is critical to containing COVID-19 and protecting Americans from other public health risks.
