Parks staff updated the City Council Monday regarding several tree initiatives taking place throughout the city.

Highlights:

  • The “Richardson Replants” program has been offering tree care information and free trees to Richardson residents since last fall to help restore Richardson’s storm-damaged tree canopy, and has provided tree plantings at City parks. More than 500 trees were given away at fall events and 500 more are scheduled to be given away in spring. Forty-two trees total were planted among six City parks, with 59 more scheduled for spring plantings. Both the Richardson Rotary Club and nonprofit One Earth One Chance have partnered with the City in providing funding and volunteers at planting events and tree giveaways.
  • Planting began this month to replace the 40 trees that were removed along Renner Road due to the 825 Pressure Zone Project; the 72 new median trees include Desert Willow and Possumhaw Holly. In addition, 50 new hardwood canopy trees are being planted nearby.
  • The original trees in the Main Street median are being replaced with new trees after two years of freeze/storm losses; replacement plantings of 15 other Main Street area trees are also planned.
  • A thorough tree assessment was recently conducted as to the health/condition of the trees on the Arapaho Road municipal campus; 92 trees are undergoing removal and 234 new trees are scheduled for planting.
