The North Texas Municipal Water District (NTMWD) will conduct its annual chlorine maintenance from March 4-April 1 to maintain the system and ensure high water quality.

During this time, some people may be able to taste or smell chlorine in their water. The temporary removal of ammonia can make the chlorine more noticeable, but the levels of chlorine in the water will not increase and will be consistent with levels found throughout the years. The intensity of the taste and odor of the chlorine can depend on how far away you are from the water treatment plant. There are a few steps to take to minimize the odor.

  • Refrigerate water in an open pitcher for several hours.
  • Add a slice of citrus or cucumber to water.
  • Add a crushed 1000 mg Vitamin C tablet to bath water.

Water disinfection is required to protect public health and keep the water safe. During the normal water treatment process, disinfection is a two-step process. It starts by treating the water at the plant, then adding disinfectant to maintain water quality as it travels long distances through pipes to homes and businesses. Each step is needed to keep tap water free of harmful microorganisms, such as parasites and viruses.
