Winners have been announced in the inaugural Black History Month Art Contest, sponsored by the City Council in partnership with RISD, PISD and UT Dallas. Students in grades pre-K through 12 (who reside in Richardson or attend an RISD school in Richardson) were asked to create a visual image that displays how their unique beliefs and values contribute to a diverse community and help promote inclusion. Entries were judged on artistic excellence, originality and reflection of the theme.

The following winners will be awarded $100 each, have their works published in the May issue of Richardson Today and other City media, and be recognized at the April 26 City Council meeting:

Pre-K-2nd Grade: Shaarvi Karthik, for work titled “Unity in Diversity”
3rd-5th Grade: Neil Thakkar, for work titled “Unity in Diversity”
6th-8th Grade: Oliver Eli Worley, for untitled work
9th-12th Grade: Caroline Huffman, for work titled, “Our Worth”
