The Richardson City Council will receive a report at next Monday’s meeting outlining the legal requirements and procedural guidelines for filling a vacancy on the City Council.
The vacancy follows this week’s announcement by City Council Member Dan Barrios that he is resigning from the Council to run for another office. Barrios was elected in May 2023 to represent City Council Place 3.
The report will provide Council with information on the process for moving forward, including the City Charter provisions related to Council vacancies, qualifications for appointment, and the steps available under the City Council’s appointment procedures.
For a single Council vacancy other than mayor, the City Charter provides that the vacancy is filled by appointment through a majority vote of the remaining City Council members. The person appointed must meet the qualifications required by the City Charter and would serve the remainder of the unexpired term.
Video of Barrios’ resignation announcement is available on the City’s CITV website at www.cor.net/CITV. City Council meeting videos are available on-demand under the City Council tab and are usually posted within 24 hours of the conclusion of the meeting.
