Earlier this week, Dallas County Health and Human Services reported the first human case of West Nile Virus (WNV) in Dallas County for 2023, and though it was found in a man living in Dallas, Richardson residents shouldn’t let down their guard when it comes to protection from mosquito bites. WNV has been detected in mosquitoes this summer in Richardson, so it’s important to practice the Four Ds of Protection:

  • DRAIN standing water around the home
  • Use insect repellent containing DEET
  • Avoid being outdoors at DUSK/DAWN when mosquitoes are most active
  • DRESS with long sleeves and pants to reduce skin exposure

The City of Richardson tests mosquitoes weekly, April-October, and conducts nighttime spraying in areas where samples test positive for West Nile.
