Weather conditions permitting, the City’s summer smoke testing is scheduled to wrap up this month for 2022, the sixth year of a multi-year project begun in 2017 to look for leaks in the City’s 400+ miles of sewer line. This year, approximately 66 miles were tested in the Spring Creek Basin area. The testing involves using smoke generators to blow nontoxic smoke into manholes and observing where the smoke finds its way out, indicating cracks in the underground piping. The coordinates of damaged pipes are noted by technicians, to be addressed in future projects.

Smoke testing will resume next year in the Rowlett Creek basin area.
