Municipal work crews went into action across the city preparing for and responding to the ice event that swept through North Texas early Thursday morning. Sanding crews that were on standby began pre-treating intersections, bridges and other road areas prone to create hazards during icy conditions around 1 a.m.
Just before 5 a.m., the winter weather placed a sheet of ice across area roads, causing more than 50 accidents, including a temporary shutdown of US 75 at Arapaho Road. The Spring Valley Road tunnel under US 75 was also temporarily closed due to safety concerns but was reopened by noon.
The slick conditions also caused Public Services Department personnel to cancel pickup of trash, recycling and Brush and Bulky Item Collection (BABIC) services for Thursday and reschedule pickup for those customers to Saturday.
The operating hours at some City facilities were also impacted to closing early and opening late Friday morning to help with commuter safety concerns.
