The Office of Emergency Management plans to conduct another monthly, sustained 90-second test of the City’s Outdoor Warning System at noon April 6, and begin conducting a new low-tone growl test starting at noon April 13.  The low-tone growl test will be conducted every second, third, fourth and fifth Wednesday of each month, with the first Wednesday reserved for the regular sustained test. Both types of tests are recommended by the siren manufacturer to ensure that mechanical parts are in working order.

The new, low-tone growl test involves 12 seconds of quiet siren rotation followed by a brief two-second winding sound. Rotator motor and “growl” equipment cycle sounds may be noticeable to those nearby.

Sirens were updated with new components at all Richardson siren units in January, with longer monthly sustained siren tests incorporated gradually since then (previous tests lasted 30 seconds). The monthly tests will expand to three minutes in July.

Siren tests are canceled if there is inclement weather or overcast skies in the area during the time of the test.
