With rain back in the forecast comes the opportunity to collect rain via a rain barrel, a great way to conserve water, capture water for use in outdoor irrigation and foundation watering and lower water bills. Rain barrel collection systems can be simple or complex, homemade or commercially purchased—click here for online do-it-yourself (DIY) directions. In addition, the Texas AgriLife Research and Extension Center, 17360 Coit Rd., will offer a DIY rain barrel class Saturday, Sept. 21 from 9-11 a.m. The cost is $50 and includes all supplies.

Rainwater harvesting systems must be registered with the City at no charge (if 400 gallons or less). Larger systems require a paid permit. For more information, visit www.cor.net/rainbarrel or call Community Services at 972-744-4180.
