Though the North Texas Municipal Water District’s (NTMWD) five area reservoirs were at or near capacity in late June, levels at four of the lakes have dropped significantly in the weeks since thanks to nonstop triple-digit temperatures, little rainfall and a dramatic increase in water usage for lawns and landscapes. The latest statistics show a 13-14 percent drop at three of the lakes (Lavon, Tawakoni and Bonham) and a nine percent drop at Cooper Lake, in just one month.
As such, the NTMWD encourages water customers to water only when needed to ease the rate of lake level decrease as well as ease the stress on the regional water delivery system and local water storage tank capacities. Water conservation also helps lower water bills and prevents overwatering, which can be detrimental for grass and other plants.
