RICHARDSON – Richardson resident, Rob Johnson, is working on raising spirits during the coronavirus pandemic by dressing up like a stormtrooper, one of the iconic characters from Star Wars and holding up signs that help make people smile.

Johnson, who is a member of the 501st Legion, an international group made up of Star Wars fans, came up with the idea after he posted a picture of himself in the stormtrooper costume on Facebook.  He intended the photo for just family and friends, but it quickly went viral. The post was shared more than 22,000 times.

While standing on a busy intersection, Johnson dressed up as the stormtrooper, holds signs that gently reminds people to wear masks and practice social distancing.  Most drivers react by honking their horns to show their support.

“We’re kind of getting antsy in our homes so, I just thought it would be a chance to really kind of breakup the monotony that we’re all going through. I’m excited that people are getting a kickout of this, it’s truly inspirational and I’m glad I can help them have a good day,” said Johnson.

The stormtrooper plans on returning to the intersection of Campbell Rd. and Custer Rd. with a set of new signs to continue his mission, including on Star Wars Day, which is May 4, a day observed by fans to celebrate the franchise.
