Sherrill Park’s Namesake
Sherrill Park Golf Course was named after Richardson’s first city manager, R.B. Sherrill. Sherrill served as City Manager from 1956-73. During that time, Richardson’s population grew from 3,000 to 57,000. A Richardson Daily News article announcing the naming of the golf course published on Aug. 27, 1973 said that Sherrill served as an engineer on two airfield projects during World War II and began his municipal service as a city engineer in Vernon, Texas from 1945-54. He was hired as City Manager in Lufkin, Texas in 1954 and served there until coming to Richardson. Sherrill passed away in 1980.
First Golf Pro
Buster Creagh was hired in April 1972 as the first golf professional at Sherrill Park. Creagh came to Richardson from Woodhaven Country Club in Fort Worth and also previously worked at Denton Country Club.
Creagh hired current Sherrill Park Head Professional Ronny Glanton in 1981 as an assistant golf professional.
“Buster was an innovator,” Glanton said. “He was enthusiastic about the golf business and understood public golf in a way no other operator did in his time. I learned a whole lot from Buster about the golf business and how to operate a public facility.”
A native of Hearne, Texas, Creagh passed away in 2016
Texas Golf Hall of Famer
Ronny Glanton has served as the Sherrill Park Head Professional since 1985 and was the Assistant Golf Professional from 1981-84. Course Designers
Sherrill Park Course 1, which opened in 1973, as well as Course 2, which opened in 1976, were designed by Leon Howard. Both courses were later redesigned by local firm Weibring and Wolfard Golf Design: Course 1 in 1997 and Course 2 in 2001. Since then, Weibring and Wolfard have performed an additional renovation on Course 1 in 2015, and will be starting renovations on Course 2 in January 2024.
