National Preparedness Month (NPM) kicked off this week with a theme of “Disasters Don’t Wait.” Launched in 2004, NPM is recognized each September to promote family and community disaster planning.

To coincide with NPM and help the Richardson community be prepared for emergencies, the City’s Office of Emergency Management is offering free preparedness bags for both adults and children at the Richardson Library, while supplies last.

The adult bags are available at the first floor information desk and include items such as a North Texas Poison Center magnet, an ice scraper and information about a variety of safety topics including how to build a disaster supply kit.

The children’s version, available at the front desk in the youth services area, comes in a nylon, “shark” backpack and includes kid-friendly safety information along with activity booklets and a “Ready 2 Help” card game.

Emergency preparedness information is also available year-round at a table in City Hall during regular business hours.
