Richardson is set to get new public art thanks to projects in the 2021 and New City Hall Bond Programs. The new art will be placed at Fire Station 5, the Animal Shelter, the Library, and City Hall. The inclusion of the pieces is part of the 2015 Public Art Master Plan, which requires all municipal bond projects to set aside up to 2 percent of total budget for public art.

Solicitations will be received from artists for the art at each of the four facilities. A final selection on the art pieces will be made by the City Council following recommendations by the Cultural Arts Commission.

Artwork Locations:

  • Fire Station 5
Artwork will be integrated into the new fence/screen for the outdoor space used by firefighters as part of their living area.
  • Animal Shelter
A sculptural artwork will be placed at the facility’s entry.
  • Library
Artists may submit proposals for two different locations at the library:
Location 1: The selected artist will suspend artwork from the ceiling of the first-floor atrium.
Location 2: A single or series of smaller sculptural works that guide visitors and enhance the walkway along the south side of the building.
  • City Hall
No location has been determined, but exterior and interior options will be considered.

Timeline
A call for artists for the art at Fire Station 5, the Animal Shelter, and the Library will be made within the next month, with applications due in November.

Artists will be selected in the spring and the artwork should be installed between mid-2024 and mid-2025.

Selection of an artist for City Hall is tentatively scheduled to begin next fall.
