Merengue is a popular genre in Latin America that is also considered to be the national dance of the Dominican Republic.

Recently, students at the University of Texas at Dallas learned about its history, the music and the moves during a special dance lesson called “Merengue with Me,” at the Visitor Center Atrium from a local professional Merengue instructor.

The event is one of many activities planned over the next few weeks celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month.

“Learning about the culture is really important to me.  You really don’t’ get to dance Merengue and learn about it in school or class. So, this was really important,” said UT Dallas student Jessica Marquis.
