UT Dallas is moving forward with construction of a new 12-acre cultural arts complex on its campus, marked by a formal groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday. Mayor Paul Voelker, campus administrators and other local leaders spoke at the event. “The Athenaeum” is projected to be built in three phases and will include a 600-800-seat auditorium, a parking garage, galleries, offices, seminar rooms and space for art storage and conservation. It will house a substantial portion of the Trammell and Margaret Crow Museum of Asian Art, currently located in the Dallas Arts District.

The two-story, 57,408-square-foot facility will be located south of the Naveen Jindal School of Management building, east of University Parkway. The site, currently a parking lot, will serve as part of the campus gateway.

Estimated opening date of Phase 1 (the museum portion) is March 2024.
