RICHARDSON – Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., a champion of civil rights and the center for a bookmark contest at the Richardson Public Library.
Two winners were selected, 3rd grader Hafsa Sayeed and 10th grader Aditi Amin, who drew Dr. King and featured quotes from some of his famous speeches including the “I have a dream” speech.
The bookmark contest gave young artist around the community the opportunity to share their passion for art, while celebrating the life and legacy of the civil rights leader.
“He was a huge inspiration to so many people. He was brave and courageous, and gives people hope,” said Amin.
Hafsa used color pencils to draw Dr. King underneath a blue sky with big clouds. She was inspired by her brother, who she once saw give a powerful speech in class for a school project. Hafsa hopes people will understand the powerful message represented in the characters she created.
“I have something in common with Dr. King, and that common thing is that I have a dream also, and I have a dream that we can work together to make the world a better place,” she said.
Both students’ winning art will be featured on bookmarks that will be available free in the Youth Services department at the Library.
