City staff briefed the City Council Monday on Richardson’s extensive disaster response efforts associated with the EF-3 tornado that hit the city Oct. 20. Numerous photos and maps were shown that illustrate the severity and breadth of the damage. In the nine minutes that the tornado passed through, more than 670 structures were affected.
Response efforts spanned numerous departments, assisted by 15 area cities. A Volunteer Coordination Center established by the City deployed more than 160 volunteers.
Contractors hired by the City continue removal of storm-related debris from public property and public rights-of-way.
A disaster declaration was made by Mayor Paul Voelker earlier Monday, which the City Council ratified Monday night. The local disaster declaration enables the City to seek federal financial assistance if it becomes available.
