Rehabilitation work is underway on sanitary sewer lines near the Promenade Shopping Center off Coit Road and in the Berkner Park neighborhood. Thanks to the construction methods being used, residents should experience only minor road closures and fewer construction vehicles and traffic.
Construction methods will utilize trenchless repair techniques, including:
- Pipe bursting technology: Pipe bursting replaces aging lines by pushing new lines through the existing infrastructure, causing the existing line to “burst” and the new line to take its place. This method allows new lines to be installed without cutting deep trenches into the roads and requires only an access pit at both the upstream and downstream ends of the pipe being replaced.
- Cured-in-Place Pipe (CIPP) Lining: CIPP process involves inserting a flexible pipe liner into the existing pipe through a manhole. The liner expands after insertion to conform to the existing pipe and is cured with UV light. This method seals any cracks or other minor imperfections within the pipe and reestablishes the structural integrity of the pipe.
Although not all projects can utilize these construction methods, wherever applicable, the City of Richardson is committed to using less impactful construction methods while maintaining high-quality infrastructure.
