The City Council authorized the City Manager Monday to enter into a new interlocal agreement (ILA) with Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART), as part of a reallocation of $233.9 million in DART funding being made available to DART service area cities.

Eligible uses for the funds include:

  • Special transportation services (elderly or disabled)
  • Medical transportation services
  • Street modifications to accommodate public transportation
  • Other service that may compliment DART service such as a parking garage, bike/pedestrian connections, etc.
  • Planning, engineering, environmental studies, etc.

The funds were made available based on federal funding DART received as part of COVID recovery efforts and stronger-than-anticipated sales tax receipts. Distribution is based on a percentage of FY 2021 and FY 2022 sales tax contributions by a city or on population of a service area city; Richardson stands to receive $14.3 million. Once service area cities and DART finalize revisions to the proposed ILA, Richardson City staff will develop a candidate project list and brief the City Council. Candidate projects must be submitted to DART prior to Jan. 31, 2024.
