In preparation for the upcoming 2021 state and federal legislative sessions, City staff presented the City Council Monday with priorities for a proposed legislative agenda for Richardson. This is in line with the City Council’s 2019-21 Strategy, “Leverage our regional leadership position to positively impact county, state and federal issues.”
Three priorities are planned to guide the City’s efforts in engaging with legislators:
- Preserve the ability for locally elected officials to govern and respond effectively and efficiently to the individual and market driven needs of its stakeholders
- Oppose any legislative action that would erode home rule authority of municipalities or establish unfunded mandates that constrain the ability of cities to allocate scarce resources to locally determined priorities
- Support legislation seeking to restore local control/home rule authority eroded by prior legislation
After providing feedback at Monday’s work session, the City Council will vote on a resolution to adopt a legislative agenda at a future City Council meeting.
