Residents “took to their yards” instead of the streets for this year’s 31st National Night Out (NNO) in Richardson, which was altered due to the coronavirus pandemic. Rather than gather for the usual block parties, residents were encouraged to decorate their front yards in a patriotic theme and hold personal picnics. Thirty-five Richardson police officers and all seven City Council members divided up and drove around town together to wave to NNO participants, visiting about 128 neighborhood groups/streets that had registered for the event. Richardson Fire Department personnel and equipment also participated in the parade-style drive-by.
The canned food collection normally held during NNO was held this year as a pre-NNO event at the City Hall parking lot Sept. 19, where 8,442 pounds of food was collected for Network of Community Ministries.
