Just as New Year’s Day is a time to make New Year’s Resolutions, Earth Day can be the start of new environmentally friendly habits. Here are some ideas to choose from:
Water Conservation
- Set your sprinkler to manual and water only when your landscape needs it. Sign up to receive weekly personalized water recommendations through the free Water My Yard program, www.watermyyard.org.
- Create a waterwise landscape by planting drought tolerant Texas Superstar® perennial plants for your landscape. Get free landscaping ideas at www.txsmartscape.com.
Recycling/Trash
- Find alternatives to products that are packaged in a pump bottle (pump mechanisms, often a mix of metal and plastic parts, are not recyclable at Richardson’s recycler).
- Buy a reusable water bottle and re-fill it rather than using prepackaged bottled water. If you do need to buy bottled water, be sure to leave the cap on when putting the bottle with other recyclables for collection so it all gets recycled.
- Practice mulch mowing and skip the bagging (more information: click here).
Clean Air
- Take steps to reduce emissions on Ozone Action Days (click here for ideas)
- Take public transportation or walk to work (try 1-2 days per week) and get rewarded for it through North Texas Council of Government’s “Try Parking It” program.
