The Richardson community gathered at Main Street Plaza in the CORE District last Saturday for a 150th birthday party honoring the City’s founding in 1873. Attendees enjoyed fare from food trucks and nearby CORE District restaurants; family activities; birthday cupcakes; and live entertainment, including the Rich-Tone Chorus and the Richardson Community Band.
A popular exhibit was the Library’s display of artifacts from a recently unearthed time capsule, buried during the City’s Centennial celebration in 1973. Items for a new time capsule were unveiled by City Council members in a presentation on the main stage. Both time capsules are available for viewing at the Richardson Public Library.
The event was the culmination of six months of activities marking the milestone, including history discussions, painting and cooking classes, an ice cream flavor taste-off, and a push for community volunteerism. The City set a goal of 150,000 cumulative volunteer minutes; volunteers ended up logging more than 998,000.
