Free Lecture Looks at the Making of Public Monuments Nov. 1

7-8 p.m.

In this lecture entitled, “Making Monuments: Public Memory and Violent Pasts,” researcher, writer and editor Dr. Rebecca Katz Thor addresses what new monuments are expected to do. Examples from across Europe are explored that show the contestations around state-funded commemorations dedicated to difficult heritage, which challenge who and what is commemorated, how historic violence is made visible and how the historical narratives are constructed in public spaces.
