September is National Preparedness Month, and while preparedness is an ongoing effort, it’s an excellent time to encourage readiness and make plans for what to do in case of weather disasters and other emergencies. Richardson’s Office of Emergency Management (OEM) provides information on tornadoes, floods, power outages, and other emergencies, including how individuals and families can be more prepared by following these four steps:

  • Be Informed— sign up for the City’s emergency alerts so you and your family can take immediate protective actions if necessary.
  • Make a Plan—before disaster strikes, decide on a meeting spot away from the home where family can meet in case of an emergency.
  • Build a Kit—make a kit with important phone numbers, documents, and enough food, water, and medicines (for pets and people) to last at least three days. OEM will have free preparedness bags available at the Library in September, including a few items to start your kit, such as an emergency blanket and first aid kit.
  • Get Involved—Donate to and volunteer with emergency relief organizations.
