The Texas Municipal Library Directors Association (TMLDA,) an affiliate of the Texas Municipal League, announced today the Richardson Public Library has earned the 2024 Achievement of Library Excellence Award. The recognition is due to demonstrated distinction with the facility’s many programs and services designed to meet the needs of a wide range of audiences, including increasing community outreach, a new seed library, a puzzle swap and multicultural events such as “Dance Around the World.”

“Receiving the 2024 Achievement of Library Excellence Award from the Texas Municipal Library Directors Association is an incredible honor,” said Library Services Director Jenny Davidson. “This recognition reflects the hard work and dedication of our entire team, who strive every day to provide outstanding programs, resources, and services to our community. We are proud to be acknowledged among Texas’ top libraries and remain committed to innovation, inclusivity, and excellence in all that we do.”

Among its programs, the Richardson Public Library offers targeted activities to engage many different age groups. Popular offerings include “Young Authors,” “Lunchtime Lectures,” “Drop-In Tech Help,” “Storytimes,” and “Summer Reading Clubs,” providing diverse learning opportunities for children, teens and adults.

“Our library is an important center for community engagement and activity in Richardson,” said City Manager Don Manger. “It is one of the core services we have a responsibility to provide, and our library staff exhibits the highest level of commitment and excellence in everything they do. I’m delighted that the TMLDA is recognizing the services offered.”

The award places Richardson’s public library in the top 19% of all public libraries in Texas. To achieve this designation, a library must exhibit excellence in 10 categories:

  1. Services to underserved populations through outreach, special programs, collaborations with other organizations, or special collections
  2. Innovative and effective marketing materials highlighting services and publicity about specific library programs
  3. Collaboration with community organizations
  4. Enhanced service to the public either through an increase in service or additional type of services

  7. Workforce development support
  8. Cultural, topical, and educational programming for adults and families
  9. Professional training opportunities for staff at all levels
  10. Other services that support community and demonstrate how the library served the community with excellence during the past year
