City is organizing planting effort and giveaway of trees to start the replacement of foliage lost in this year’s May 28 severe storm event.

(Richardson, TX) – The first tree giveaway for the Richardson Replants program has been scheduled to take place later this month during the Public Safety Expo to be held at Huffhines Park. Richardson Replants is an initiative announced by the Mayor and City Council in July to address the significant tree loss caused by a May 28 severe weather event that brought hurricane-force winds to Richardson and other parts of the DFW Metroplex.

“Richardson Replants represents our commitment to restoring the natural beauty of our city after the devastating May 28 storm,” said Richardson Mayor Bob Dubey. “By hosting these tree giveaway events, we will help our community replant, renew, and restore our natural canopy for both residential properties and our shared open space at area parks.”

This fall, 500 trees will be available, with three different species: Desert Willow, Chinkapin Oak and Peach. Spring giveaways are anticipated to offer an additional 500 trees and may offer other species, depending on availability from local nurseries. The fall and spring planting periods were chosen as they are the best time of year for establishing new trees.

Fall Tree-Giveaway Schedule

Richardson Replants will host multiple giveaways this fall and spring, offering three tree species suited for North Texas. Trees will be made available on a first-come, first-served basis, with a limit of one tree per household. Proof of residency, such as a driver’s license or water bill, will be required to be shown.

Park Planting with Community Partners

City parks were also severely impacted by the May 28 storm event, and Glenville Park, one of the most impacted, will have 18 trees planted on Texas Arbor Day, Nov. 1, through a continued partnership with the nonprofit One Earth One Chance, which is paying for half of all trees being provided through the Richardson Replants program.

The Richardson Rotary club is also providing grant funding to plant trees and pay for branded Replant Richardson signs.

By May 28, 2025. Richardson Replants will place 100 new trees at local parks. Plantings will occur as trees are made available.

Storm Impact on Vegetation

In Richardson, the May 28 storm event created more than 260,000 cubic yards of vegetative debris, equivalent to nearly four years of normal Brush and Bulky Item Collection service.
