The Arbor Day Foundation has named Richardson a 2024 Tree City USA in recognition of its ongoing efforts to protect and replenish trees throughout the community. For more than 50 years, the Tree City USA program has recognized cities and towns that leverage urban forestry to enhance the livability and sustainability of their local area.

To earn Tree City USA recognition, a city must uphold four core standards, including maintaining a tree board or department, having a community tree ordinance, spending at least $2 per capita on urban forestry, and participating in an Arbor Day celebration. Richardson’s commitment to urban forestry and sustainability includes initiatives like Richardson Replants, which has helped replenish the City’s tree canopy since the May 28, 2024 severe storm (see story below for an update). Richardson’s Parks and Recreation Department also works with groups and individuals who want to purchase trees to be planted on city-maintained land.
