Richardson has been deemed one of the safest cities in the nation for pedestrians in a recent study released by personal finance website MoneyGeek, coming in at No. 15  among 305 cities with a population of 100,000 or more. To determine the rankings, MoneyGeek staff looked at U.S. Department of Transportation data from 2017-20 regarding traffic fatalities. 

Pedestrian deaths account for one in five traffic fatalities in Texas, according to the Texas Department of Transportation. Last year, there were 5,366 crashes involving pedestrians in Texas, resulting in 841 deaths, a 15 percent increase in pedestrian fatalities over the previous year. Richardson’s annual average number of pedestrian fatalities, according to the study, is 1, or .43 per 100,000 residents.
