Public art concepts chosen to be part of the renovations at Fire Station 5 and the Animal Shelter were unveiled at Monday’s City Council meeting. The art finalists were determined by each facility’s art selection committee after a nationwide Call for Artists was issued in late 2023.

Artwork incorporated into a decorative screening fence was desired for Fire Station 5, and the proposal from Richardson-based artist Tony Schraufnagel was chosen out of 28 applications. It depicts firefighting symbols through three metal layers.

A whimsical mosaic sculpture inspired by a Brothers Grimm fairy tale illustration has been selected as the entryway art for the Animal Shelter, proposed by Austin-based artist GiGi Miller. The design incorporates a dog, cat, parrot and iguana and was chosen from 50 applications.

The art is expected to be installed at each facility in early 2025. Public art is included in the construction or renovation of any municipal building in Richardson as per the City’s Public Art Master Plan approved in 2015.
