Richardson Police Chief Gary Tittle gave his department’s End of Year Review for 2021 at Monday’s City Council work session, including a look at organizational changes, accomplishments, crime strategies, community relations/outreach and crime statistics.
While auto theft decreased in 2021 from 2020, Chief Tittle reported that the category “Theft of Motor Vehicle Parts” saw an increase of catalytic converter thefts (351 total stolen).
Other statistics he noted include:
- Out of 40,000+ homes now in Richardson (both apartment and free-standing dwellings), residential burglary remained steady at 87 from 2020 to 2021. Of those, 19 were a result of an unlocked door or open garage. This category has seen a significant decline since 2009, when residential burglaries hit 500.
- One out of four cars stolen had its keys in the ignition or close by.
- Over the past 21 years, Richardson has seen its violent crimes (per 100,000 people) cut in half, remaining significantly lower in this statistic than the state and national average.
