Poinsettias don’t have to be a “one and done” kind of plant, thrown away or composted once the holiday season is over. According to Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, with proper care they can last for years. Here is some advice to help keep the showy plants alive and well through the holiday season and beyond:
- Go easy on watering—poinsettias don’t like their roots sitting in water
- Keep the plants in bright but indirect sunlight, and away from heaters and air conditioners
- Ideal temperature for poinsettias is 65-70 degrees Fahrenheit. If putting outdoors, place in a shady area once temperatures are consistently above 60 degrees.
- Prune the plant halfway up the stem soon after the holidays and replant it in a larger pot.
- Protect the plant from artificial light after late September to promote blooms in time for the holidays—i.e. place in total darkness between sundown and sunrise
