Aquatics program managers are adding incentives for lifeguards to attract much-needed recruits to allow for summertime pool operations. Demand for lifeguards and other pool staff is at an all-time high in the region, and currently the City’s Parks and Recreation Department only has 20 positions filled of the 80 total number of lifeguards needed to open its public pools and the aquatics center, and to offer summer swim classes.
Increased pay scales and a variety of incentives are part of the seasonal hiring initiative. Bonuses of $50 and additional pay of up to $750 for working the entire season are also offered.
Currently, the aquatics program is expecting to have just half of the personnel needed for when swim season starts in June. If personnel can’t be found, operational changes to pool facilities will be reviewed.
All positions are open to those ages 15 and older. All lifeguard applicants must hold current certifications in lifeguard training, CPR and First Aid through the American Red Cross with recertification costs covered for all returning lifeguards. Applicants can apply prior to completing certifications, but will not be placed on payroll until the certification is obtained.
