2022 will be a year of data collection and public meetings for the Richardson Parks Department, as the City’s Parks, Recreation and Open Space Master Plan undergoes a required update. The Master Plan guides the development and redevelopment of parks and recreation resources and serves as the primary planning guide for prioritizing future projects and programming. Richardson updates the plan every five years (and re-writes it every 10) in order to qualify for grant funding opportunities as well as to keep up with changing facility conditions and space needs

City staff outlined the current update’s scope at Monday’s City Council work session and introduced the outside consultant/project team that will be assisting Parks with the update. Phase 1 will include a facility and program inventory and analysis, as well as public input and engagement through focus groups, open house meetings and online surveys; an action plan will be developed in Phase 2.

The process is being conducted in coordination with the Active Transportation Plan (see below). The final Master Plan update is expected to be presented to the City Council for adoption in the first quarter of 2023.
