Air North Texas, a division of the North Central Texas Council of Governments, is reminding North Texans that Halloween can be a time of “scary” environmental impact, with many single-use items mass produced for the holiday, including costumes (that are often made of environmentally harmful synthetic materials) and plastic decorations.
Here are some ways to create a more sustainable Halloween:
- Try DIY costumes, repurposing old clothes and thrift store finds, or costume swaps with friends and neighbors
- Opt for decorations that are biodegradable/compostable, such as those that involve REAL pumpkins, gourds, cornstalks, leaves, twigs and pinecones (make sure to throw away any pieces that have “add-ons” such as glue and paint before putting in a compost bin)
- Choose solar-powered string lights and lanterns when setting up outdoor lighting
- Trick-or-treat using reusable treat bags, such as cloth totes, pillowcases or reusable shopping bags
- Cut down on driving when trick-or treating. Walk among and between neighborhoods or attend local “trunk or treat” events where you can park and walk among cars/tables. If you need to drive to trick-or-treat, try carpooling.
