No Kid Hungry Texas, a partner agency of the Richardson Independent School District, has dubbed this month #ThankAHungerHero Month, and, on behalf of the community and City Council, this week Richardson Mayor Paul Voelker released a special thank you on social media directed to the frontline workers who have volunteered to deliver food to families and children in need.

When schools closed in March, many students in the Plano and Richardson independent school districts lost their main source of nutritious meals. Both Richardson and Plano ISDs have since started programs to continue to provide meals through workers and volunteers. Other groups in Richardson are also helping others, such as the Network of Community Ministries, North Texas Food Bank and DART drivers.

Local nonprofit Network of Community Ministries is in need of food, supplies and volunteers to help meet increased demand due to COVID-19. The organization has been busy packing emergency weekend food boxes for Richardson ISD families in addition to running its normal food pantry distribution and other services such as utility assistance.
