Some streetlights in Richardson are being replaced as older high-pressure sodium (HPS) fixtures reach the end of their service life. High-pressure sodium streetlights, known for their amber glow, are being phased out as manufacturers discontinue production nationwide.
As these older fixtures fail or become unsafe, Oncor replaces them with LED streetlights, now the industry standard. Nearby high-pressure sodium lights that are still working remain in place until they reach the end of their service life, allowing for a gradual, cost-effective transition.
The new LED lighting provides clearer visibility, better color recognition and more focused illumination while using less energy and requiring less maintenance.

LED streetlights provide several key benefits, including:
- Improved reliability and lifespan
- HPS fixtures last 15 years and require replacements every 4-6 years. LEDs are rated for 15-20 years with no replacements, reducing outages and maintenance needs.
- Reduced energy use and operating costs
- LEDs consume significantly less electricity, creating long-term savings for both utilities and communities while improving service reliability.
