Richardson Fire Chief Curtis Poovey presented the Fire Department’s annual report at Monday’s City Council meeting, a comprehensive summary of the department’s 2023 activities and accomplishments. Highlights of the report include: 

  • 17 new firefighters were recruited, hired and trained as part of Class 44; 18 new recruits have been recruited and hired for Class 45 
  • EMS and Fire crews responded to 14,018 emergency incidents in 2023 which accounted for a total of 23,184 apparatus responses 
  • Of the $117.5M in property involved in fire incidents, $113.2M was saved 
  • A former HazMat vehicle is being reconfigured into a traffic blocker vehicle; it’s expected to be in service full time by mid-August  
  • The department maintained Richardson’s “Heart Safe Community” designation and received Gold Plus recognition from the American Heart Association 
  • A new ambulance was put in service at Fire Station 6 

 
To best serve the Richardson community in light of its growth, the department began working on its first Fire Master Plan in November. The draft Master Plan is expected to be complete late this summer.
